With an increasing frequency these days, patients with dental emergencies are seeking care in the Emergency Department (ED) of their local hospital. Their problems range from a simple missing filling all the way up to a life-threatening abscess or infection. A recent review by the National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey showed that dental ED visits increased from 1.1 million to 1.65 million in the past 10 years. This accounts for nearly 2% of all ED visits. This can be a serious concern since a vast majority of these situations do not need urgent care and can easily wait until they can be seen by a general dentist or oral surgeon. By clogging up the ED system and occupying physician and staff time, they are taking valuable time away from other patients who need the care more rapidly. It could be the difference between life and death for someone who truly needs help!
