Dr. Ryan and I, as well as tens of thousands of men the world over, have all decided to give the razor a break for the entire month of November and grow a moustache. Our “mo”tivation is to join the Movember and Sons movement in raising awareness of men’s health issues such as annual physicals and the importance of prostate examinations. Anyone who watched an NFL game in October or even stepped outside their house knew that last month was breast cancer awareness month. The program has been very successful in getting the word out regarding regular examinations to help increase survival rates on a curable form of cancer. It is time that men across the globe create a similar stir for our own health issues.
Did you know that 1 in 6 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime? This year alone, over a quarter of a million new cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed. This is only part of the real story since only 1 in 3 men get their annual physical completed. In just the first week of this hairy awareness, I have been able to convince 3 of our male patients to call their physicians and schedule an appointment!
